The Spider Was Intact, but Two Arms Carried Uneven Buildup

The washer behaved normally when empty and shook with a wet load. Replacing the spider removed the vibration even though the old casting was not broken.

Why the first test was misleading

The LG washer shook hard enough to pull its drain hose loose. Counterweights were in place, and an empty diagnostic test completed without an obvious problem. The important correction from the discussion was that this service test was intended for an empty drum: it could drive the motor to high speed without normal load-balancing protection.

A similar symptom can have a different cause on another washer. The safe observation is whether vibration changes between an empty drum and a balanced, ordinary load—not to run a loaded high-speed service test.

What the completed repair revealed

The technician later replaced the drum spider and reported that the vibration disappeared. The removed spider was not cracked. Heavy residue had accumulated unevenly on two arms, creating an off-center mass when the wet basket accelerated.

This result explains why an empty check and a simple visual suspension inspection did not reproduce the customer's complaint.

A safer diagnostic sequence for loaded vibration

  1. Confirm that the washer is level and that shipping hardware is absent.
  2. Compare an empty spin with a normal balanced load in a regular cycle.
  3. Check basket play, counterweights, shocks and suspension before major disassembly.
  4. If vibration is load-dependent, inspect for uneven mass on the basket and spider.
Moving-parts safety: do not run a service-mode high-speed spin with laundry in the drum. Disconnect power before cabinet or tub access; spider replacement requires major disassembly by a qualified technician.
